Saturday morning walk

What does a Food photographer do on a Saturday morning? Go to the Farmers Market! In this case, I went to Edinburgh Farmer's market, which is the closest near me. It is located on the Castle terrace, the view is spectacular! Especially in summer when the skies are clear and we get those beautiful blue Northern European skies in Scotland! I love walking through the Meadows park in Edinburgh.

What equipment do I need to photograph in bright daylight?

I decided to take my Nikon d750 and a 50mm lens with me that day. I didn’t take my 35mm-105mm Micro lens, as wanted to swing by the Fishmongers( I love Eddie’s in Marchmont) after and it is a heavier camera lens. We all love 'golden hour' in daylight photography( 4pm), but sometimes you cannot choose your light. I would also recommend changing your white balance to an appropriate setting to suit the day. I wanted to capture the shadows and the direct light at the same time.

What to get

I got to the market at around12 noon. I always go and see all the cheese and local veg first. As a food photographer, I get incredibly excited over fresh local produce. I start planning what I am going to that night after straight away.

I am a huge fan, of getting some cheese and some veggies – I am absolutely obsessed with photographing veg still life when I get home. I always look for local cheeses and I love trying something new.

I loved seeing fresh local organic produce that day. Buying seasonally is one of the best things we can do, for our health and the planet. I ended up getting some chard, fresh spring onions and also some cheeses and cured meats.

Do you have a favourite market stall? Please tell me more. Is there another market I should check out in Edinburgh?

Are you a food business owner and thinking of getting some professional food images done to further your business? Get in touch! I would love more about your business and your market stall and visit. I love chatting about all things food and food photography.
